Our knees are very fragile and it can be incredibly easy to damage them. Fortunately there are also many ways in which we can treat knee injuries and that is what we shall look at in today’s article.
Visiting the Doctor
When you first sustain a knee injury it is important that you see a doctor immediately as leaving it for too long can cause more damage to it. Even if it is only a minor injury it is always worth having it checked out and getting advice from your doctor as to what treatment it needs and whether or not you require surgery.
Basic Knee Injury Treatment
For minor knee injuries such as strains and sprains then the general rule to remember is RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation).
The less pressure you can put onto your knee the quicker it will heal. By resting your knee and minimizing the amount you walk and put pressure on it the better.
Ice is also very important in the treatment of knee injuries. By applying a cold ice pack to the injured area you will help minimize the swelling that occurs with knee injuries. It also helps increase blood flow to the injured area to speed up the recovery process.
Bandages and Crutches
It can be hard to rest your knee during the whole recovery process, as we all have places to be and people to see! However, bandages and crutches can help minimize the pressure put on your knee when you are walking from A to B.
Compression bandages help keep the knee in place and prevent unnecessary twists and movement that may arise when your knee is weak. It gives your knee more support so that there is less pain and the injury can not worsen.
Crutches are another way of relieving the pressure on your knee injury as well as preventing further injury. These are most commonly used by those with more severe knee injuries such as fractures, dislocations and those who have had surgery on their knee – as it gives much more pressure release than a bandage can give.
Pain Medication
Although it won’t actually cure your knee injury it is a way of treating the pain that you may have. Depending on the injury you may require strong pain medication from your doctor; however minor knee injuries can usually be treated with paracetamol from your local drug store.
Always remember though that even though you may not be able to feel the pain in your knee when you are on pain medication that the injury is still there. So continue to avoid putting pressure on the injury even if you don’t feel as though anything is wrong as you will slow down the treatment process.
Strengthening the Knee during Treatment
It is very important that the muscles around your injured knee are kept strong to minimize the amount of pressure that is put on your actual knee.
By doing strengthening exercises it also prevents your knee from becoming weak during the recovery process which may cause it to be more susceptible to damage in the future.
Physical Therapy
Depending on the severity of the injury, and for those that have undergone knee surgery – physical therapy can be an integral part of the knee injury treatment.
Surgery can make the knee and the surrounding muscles incredibly weak so it is necessary for the patient to see a physical therapist to begin the rehabilitation process and bring the knee back to its original strength.
It is important to see a professional to make sure that any at-home exercises you are doing are not causing your knee more harm than good that could slow down the treatment process.
Physical therapists are trained to be able to understand how the knee heals from injury and can prescribe specific exercise programs to ensure you receive the best knee injury treatment possible.
